Android phone keyboard changed from QWERTY to keypad style

As the title says, when I try to type a message on my Android phone (Samsung) instead of the standard QWERTY keyboard I've always had it now displays the equivalent of what would be on an old style phone i.e. ABC on the 2, DEF on 3 etc.  I'm not aware of doing anything to cause that, and it was qwerty earlier today. 

Can somebody explain how to get the qwerty keyboard back please.

ETA.  I've managed to get the qwerty keyboard back, but if anybody can explain what might have caused the change I would be grateful.

Bottom right, the little keyboard button probably got tapped and then one of the radio buttons got tapped as well.

you changed the  keyboard settings

@EnPointe Thanks for that.  Matt referred to a little keyboard button at the bottom right.  There is (currently) no keyboard icon/button displayed.  When I open a message in Whatsapp all I have is the emoji icon at the left and the paperclip and camera icons on the right.

The keyboard doesn't appear until you tap in the WhatsApp text box

I seem to remember that layout on the first 2 phones I had. 2004.

Maybe for some reason they have the option for people who prefer that?

No keyboard icon when I'm in the Whatsapp text box.  Just those I listed previously.  What has appeared, which I don't recall seeing prior to this happening, is a tiny keyboard icon at the side of the time in the top left corner.  When I pulled that down it showed Samsung keyboard and disappeared when I left that dialog.  Strange but no great problem as I've got the keyboard back pretty much as it was before, with punctuation marks etc within the keyboard.
