Maternity leave and paid too much student loan and tax

in Cutting tax
Hi, I’ve been on mat leave since August and since December I’ve been on SMP since then. I earn an average wage and my pension and tax I believe has been taken from my SMP. Also student loan was taken for the first 8 months.
When can I see if I can claim some student loan back? And how does it work with the tax? I’m sure I will have paid too much.
Thank you

Have you been getting monthly pay slips since going on maternity leave?
Could you post the details from your March payslip?0 -
I haven’t been able to access them as guess that would tell me more …
I might see if I can get one from HR0 -

For student loans, the important question is whether in the financial year you earned over the threshold. If you were over the threshold, then you are not entitled to any repayment of your student loan. If you were under the threshold for the year as a whole you can request repayment of any repayments you made.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages, student & coronavirus Boards, money saving boards. This strongly suggests to me that you are receiving enhanced SMP. On the basic SMP you get 90% of your average for 6 weeks then just the basic SMP of just over £170 a week (sometimes lower). That would result in no deduction of tax NI or loan after the six weeks, and in most cases some tax rebate would be added to the SMP.
If you are getting enhanced SMP then it is possible you are getting enough to pay the deductions. There is nothing special about SMP it counts exactly the same as your ordinary earnings, if you get enough you will pay tax etc.
Enhanced SMP is down to the individual employer but as an example NHS pays 8 weeks at average pay then 18 weeks at 1/2 average pay plus the basic SMP then 13 weeks basic SMP. That would certainly result in tax etc being deducted for 6 months.
On the other hand of course as it seems you have not seen your payslips it might be just a misunderstanding, and all will be clear when you get the payslips.
