Why don't you simply open an account in your name only, transfer everything to it then either close the account or remove your own name from it?0

The T&Cs for the joint account might specify that the signature of both account holders is needed to remove an account holder, or to close the account. From information in this thread, I gather this is the case for the OP, so he simply can't do what you suggest.
