Why has car oil almost doubled lately?

It hasn't, you must be looking in the wrong place or need some specialist stuff.
Eg. Castrol Edge 5W30 is £32 for 4l in Halfords.0 -
The oil I use hasn't. £26 for 5 litres.

It depends on the oil as to the price, but it hasn't changed much recently, so unless your used to cost is 10 years ago its still in the same ball park it was a year ago like for like.
A good spec is in the £40-70 range with medium spec in the £30-40 range. So you only have to be comparing two across the spectrum to get the view you have come up with, but it is likely the spec difference which is driving the price difference.0
