You didn't ever have to take out a credit agreement or pay it all by credit card. A mere £100 deposit on a card would have given you S75 protection for the full value of the order , assuming less than £30k..
Does not even have to be £100. 1p would do.

I wouldn't do business with a company that wouldn't accept a credit card for even part of the deposit.  I've turned away from deals with double glaziers, car dealerships and landscapers who wouldn't accept even a nominal part of the payment on my credit card.

Sorry to hear of your situation, OP, but as you can see, in future, you only need to put a small amount onto a credit card, so your card limit isn't a problem even if the deposit is beyond it.  Where it wouldn't have helped is if the purchase for all the fittings and/or fitting itself from the retailer exceeded £30k.

Ah.  So a chargeback would give protection against the trader going bust etc just like s75.

    Thankyou @eskbanker and @born_again

Thanks for correcting that. Minimum £100 order value, of course.

Ditto, we recently walked away from a £15k sports car deal because the dealer either wouldn't or couldn't accept even £100 on a credit card despite us being happy to pay the rest via bank transfer.

Minimum £100 item value - although jobs like OP's will generally be regarded as a single item for s75 purposes, a transaction totalling over £100 but comprising individual items below that value wouldn't be covered.

Not exactly @Okell, a chargeback would only protect you for the amount paid by that card whereas a S75 covers you for the full cost irrespective how much was paid on the credit card. So if you paid the deposit by debit card and did a bank transfer for the balance you'd only get back the deposit.

Assuming the OP paid it all by bank transfer then they will be a low priority unsecured creditor and as such will be lucky if they get a few pennies per pound spent and likely will need to wait a fairly long time to get that.
