Whilst varnished or painted treads will be more slippy than carpeted, countless folk have them with no issues, and they are a perfectly acceptable finish.
You obviously need to make a judgement on the safety risk, taking into account, say, younger kids who run around with abandon, but if you want them, have them. Just like varnished wooden floors.
If you use painted or varnished stairs with wet feet, you are being silly - especially if you don't hold on to the bannister.
I renovated my bro's first house, putting in 4 flights of satin-varnished open-tread stairs in parana pine, 32 years ago. Ok, they were half-flights, so you'd only fall around 2m if you slipped or tripped, but no-one did, remotely close, in that time.
I don't know if you can get transparent stick-on anti-slip strips for near the front edges?
Or, is anti-slip paint/varnish 'cosmetically' acceptable?

    Definitely no :-.
No kids and no older people here, so since we are all still in the bloom of our best years (50+) it's really not something to be concerned about.
Maybe in 20 years time it could become a concern, but for the time being I think we'll enjoy the beauty of timber and  keep a hand on the banister (avoiding barefoot) as we've done so far, and especially without carpet :-).

Yes you can, comes in a roll and you cut to fit. We had to buy some for our house when we rented it out.
