i have had a look at the dell and it is £71 cheaper without the blu ray drive.

do you think it will be worth it if the drive is only £71 extra?
  • well, if someone offered me a blu-ray player for my tv or external blu-ray player for my mac right now for 71quid I wouldn't bother. not unless I was mega-rich, but if you were mega-rich we wouldn't be having this discussion about which laptop to buy. ;)

plus, if you have a blu-ray drive now, you'll want games/movies to play on it now. as the tech's only just come out, these discs are expensive (remember how much dvds cost when they first hit). so you could end up 'investing' a lot of money over the next year or so on technology that isn't in use beyond that.

    true.

would you recommend spending that extra money from saving on the blu ray drive to upgrade vista to vista ultimate?
  • well, like I probs said I use Macs in the main and PCs occasionally, most still running XP. from what I've heard vista is still using a helluva lot of cpu, esp. on the various bells and whistles (e.g. the widgets apps) they've copied from mac osx. the 'general' consensus from ppl I know who've used/considered vista is that its not worth rushing out for. that said, there must be a thread (or 7) in this forum on the merits/faults of vista which will give you a better idea of whether its worth it or not.

personally, I'd look at using the spare cash to upgrade the gfx card, memory or hard drive. or put it to one side for any hardware you might want to buy in the next few months (e.g. mp3 player, printer, etc). why not just count it as a saving and ear-mark it for your next 'puter related purchase?

  • meant to add re vista - patches and updates should help rectify the cpu issue and that's why u should check any vista threads on here as I have no idea (and no need to have one, lol) about where vista is up to since its release. I'm also not sure how much patches can rectify the cpu issue, or if there's only so much they can do without rewriting the software from the ground up, so to speak.
