Soya mince cooking times

I'm doing a bolognaise sauce with soya mince. The recipe would need 1 - 1.5hrs if I was using meat. How long do you think I should give the sauce considering I'm using soya mince instead?

also, can you freeze soya mince?

thanks

I find the mince only takes about 5 mins to cook, although it won't spoil if you cook it for longer. Just keep an eye on the sauce, as soya mince does seem to absorb a fair amount of liquid. I'm pretty sure you could freeze it, can't see any reason why not.
  • as above it does not take long. You can freeze soya meat bolognaise
  • Trying to avoid beef mince myself. Is Soya better than Quorn or is it a matter of taste ???

    I prefer soya mince YM.....
I am not a big fan of quorn, as I find the texture spongy:eek:

I dont know what is better for you, but I think the soya mince is cheaper. I bought a bag of dried soya mince from the health food shop. 500grams was less than £2.

I have heard quite a few on here saying that they use soya mince to bulk out meat mince.... so that would cut down your consumption.... and I would have thought will still give you the taste of beef ect....
  • Thanks for that.

I must admit that Quorn was a bit pricey for what it was. Will try Soya mince and see how i get on.

  • I am not a veggie but DS is. I have tried both and persoanlly I think soya mince is disgusting, but quorn mince is acceptable. I buy quorn mince when it is on bogof then it is not too bad, I do the same with all quorn products.
DS is generally not keen on (prtend) meat products, but sometimes I have to do something quick. And sometimes I just can't be bothered to do 2 different meals.

We use Quorn for green days in SW, but I'm not keen on it in Shepherds Pie. Is soya frozen too or dried?

Not sure its cheaper though? 100g at Tesco is 99p, 350g of Quorn is £1.80??!
  • You get much more out of dried Soya Mince than equal weight of Quorn Mince.

I like both - usually buy Soya Mince in bulk from Chinese Supermarket or from Lembas (wholesale place in Manchester that delivers to Birmingham....) but also get Quorn Mince from Farmfoods where it is ALWAYS on BOGOF.

I think you just have to realise that either Quorn or Soya Mince have to be cooked in a completely different way than Meat Mince.... then you are ok. I like Soya Mince better in Shephard's Pie tough

How do you work out quantities then with Soya?

There's no Farmfoods where I work or live, but one in the next town, so might pop in when I run low on Quorn (got a freezer full at the mo!)

You can buy soya mince both frozen & dried. If you get frozen just use quantities as you would meat mince. The dried stuff bulks up to approx 2ce the size when you reconstitute it. I don't worry too much about quantities to be honest because if I do too much I just freeze it.

I'm vegan so don't eat Quorn but as long as you get a lot of flavour into the soya mince it's fine.
