I know this is a money saving forum but cannot understand why some people play russian roulette with their holiday via passport validity when it easier to get it renewed and enjoy the next 10 years travel problems free.
As above, I don't believe it's anything like Russian roulette to travel with a passport compliant with widely visible and well-documented rules, but happy to be corrected if there are credible reports of significant numbers of travellers recently being refused entry/boarding with valid passports....
I think there have been SOME instances of people being refused travel rights by some of the budget airlines when their passports were valid.

But was that teething troubles when the rules first came into play, or recently, once established?

Immunity to irrational anxiety is not quite the same thing as playing russian roulette...

  • Will the new passport apply the months that are still showing as added over 10 years? Or will they not add those months anymore due to the perceived problem with entering some countries on a current passport that has 10 years plus a few months?

HMPO ceased adding the extra months' passport validity for early renewal a few years ago, I think prior to the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement coming into effect.

Indeed, 10 September 2018 to be precise:
From 10 September 2018 all Adult passports will be issued with a duration of 10 years and will expire 10 years after the date of issue and all Child passports will be issued with a duration of 5 years and will expire 5 years after the date of issue

  • Hi. I'm still confused. I travel to Venice in May and the dates on my passport are,

    Issued 24th August 2014
    Expires 24th February 2025

Do these dates make me ok. What would be the final date I could travel to Europe without any issues?

    Thanks for your help.

... but bearing in mind the EU seem intent on punishing Brits for leaving the EU ...
    That is not the case.
The EU are simply applying their laws consistently to all third party nations.
These are laws that the UK was instrumental in creating while it was a member.

They stopped adding those extra months in September 2018. That's how I found out about this change. There was a feature about it on MSE after people complained about not having any months carried over. I got my new passport in January 2019. It still looks like an EU passport (red and with an EU heading) but has no months carried over.

You will be ok to travel in May. You won't be allowed to travel to an EU country after 23rd August 2024 and you must return by 24th November 2024 (3 months before your expiry date).
