I imagine that would apply to a lot of us since technology has moved on so much and clearly cash wouldn't force you to rebuy stuff you were thinking about ditching anyway. I think that would just be a case of turning a bad situation to your advantage rather then than being deliberately devious. In my brief call to Santander, she seemed to rule out the possibility of cash even though I mentioned the discount aspect and cash wasn't mentioned in policy document. Either it was a case of her not being very knowledgeable about the question or Santander being pretty inflexible. Maybe some standard insurers are better than others. I don't think you mentioned the name of your insurer.
Not sure how many people have a storage room full of their prior TVs etc? Suspect most dispose of their old device on replacement. Where it tends to be more common is jewellery etc which may have been an inheritance or gifts from a late partner etc and so hold much more sentimental value. Still with vouchers you aren't forced to buy a replacement "nana's wedding ring" but can buy any other form of jewellery.

The Santander policy book I looked at online does mention cash settlements.
