Sold car - automatic road tax refund?

When you sell a car, does the outstanding road tax get automatically refunded, or do I need to claim it?
Thanks.

Change of Registered Keeper should trigger an automatic refund.

…in the form of a piece of paper with writing on one side, sent in the post using an envelope, something they used to call it a “cheque”?

If you have given DVLA your bank account details (by signing up for direct debit) they pay it straight into your account.
If you refuse to let them have your details (like me) then they send a cheque within a few days of the change of keeper being done online.

I didn’t send them a cheque to begin with, seems a missed opportunity not to refund via my original payment method…

It should do but in view of the issues I've found before I would always cancel the DD to ensure that no more is taken and check carefully that you receive the refund in the time given.

Did you set up a direct debit? They should have just refunded to your bank account as they have the details.

If you made a one-off card payment, online or at the Post Office they aren't supposed to keep the card details so they can't refund direct to the card.

  • Just takes 2 minutes to put a cheque into your account using your bank app.

You take a picture of the cheque did it 2 days ago, today it is pending to be added to my account. You should also get a letter stating that u r not the registered keeper which u should keep.
