Student loan pre 1998

Hi all,
I had a student loan which (I think) was pre-1998. I had a nervous breakdown, was hospitalised and never finished my degree.
I then moved abroad where I was mentally unwell for a number of years. My student loan was the last thing on my mind.
I have never contacted the student loan company since I took out the loan 26/27/28 years ago.
I'm wondering if the loan might have been written off or perhaps I now owe a fortune.
Any advice gratefully received.
Stephen

You have to be very clear when you took the loan
The 1990-1997 loans were wiped either 25 years after the first payment of your last loan (normally the first payment in your final year but in your case, the payment made before you left the course) or when you reached 50, whichever is earlier (assuming a normal student starting age - if you were 40 when it started, it runs to 60)
1998-2005 are wiped at 65
The repayment rules would normally allow you to defer under a certain wage but this won't apply I assume - so you may owe money, you may have had it wipedSam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:
People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.
