if you name the employer then someone might know. Was it a DC pension and not DB/final salary.

  • I am trying to trace a DB pension I had with a Bank in Guernsey that was bought out by HSBC between 1999 and 2001.  The pension was originally with Norwich Union and Aviva UK cannot find it.  Does Guernsey have a place to trace a pension, help please.  For reference, I worked in a bank in Gibraltar that was also bought out by HSBC around the same time.

    Thanks

If it were a DB pension, it wouldn't be with NU.   That would make it a DC pension.   If it were transferred out of the DB pension to NU, then that would turn it into a DC pension.

ex CGNU plans are pretty easy for Aviva to trace, as they just need your NI number.   Assuming your NI number was correct.   However, it is possible your pension was Guernsey or Gibraltar-based rather than UK-based?
Aviva sold its offshore operations around a decade ago.  The company they sold it to has since been purchased by Utmost International.

How long did you work there and were you a member of the pension scheme from day one until you left?

There is a chance the Guernsey Scheme became part of the HSBC UK scheme.  You could try asking here

When (or if ) the Government finally bring this Pensions Dashboard in, will it show all the existing Pensions that you hold ?
I really hope so, as it would help everybody.  But, I guess this may not be in the Pension Companies interest, as they quite happily sit on large sums that will never get taken as the person has either forgot about or died.

Only if they are 'within scope' - and of course the data included will only be as good as the data held, which may or may not be correct and complete.

Actually unclaimed pensions are a pain in the neck for pension companies. They have to continue to administer the wretched things and try to find the owner. If protracted attempts fail to unite cash and member, then the relevant funds could be transferred to a 'dormant asset' fund - they aren't used to bolster the pension provider's profits!

Not necessarily if they are outside the UK as per the post above
