Tax code changed, no idea why?

Hi everyone, my basic salary for my main job is £42050, and occasionally I do overtime, to the tune of about £1000 per year. The tax code for that has been 1257L.

I have a second job which pays about £4000 per year. The tax code for that is BR.

Recently HMRC has notified that my tax code has been changed to 798T. I just can't figure out why!

It looks as though this has increased my tax amount, but it's a bit hard to work out because I've been working overtime so there are fluctuating amts

I'll do a self-assessment once I get my P60s but does anyone have an idea as to why this would happen? Seems very random.

"T indicates allowances are split between 2 or more incomes and HMRC will review the code every year."

Has the tax code on the other job changed?

Check online what it says the estimates are for next year - you can change them if HMRC have "over estimated" one of them

what you should have though is the two tax codes should add up to 1257, so if you have 798 on one the other will probably be something like 459M ( M indicates that it's your main job ).

Ah that's interesting, thank you. There doesn't seem to be any interface on the HMRC website for me to ask for an explanation or to request that the tax code be changed. I've just been on hold for an hour on their phone lines.

Can i ask my employers to change the tax codes?

Ah I should have said that the tax code on the main job has changed to 798T. The second job is still BR.

No, employers only change tax codes upon instruction from HMRC.

Use this link Personal tax account: sign in or set up - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk) to set up a personal tax account. You will need to provide some information to be able to identify yourself. Once done, you'll be able to view your tax codes.

Thanks I should have said I do in fact have an HMRC account, but all it shows is, "Your tax code has changed". It doesn't say why. There's also no interface for me to submit a query. I've rung but gave up holding after an hour.

Your on line account will show how the code has been calculated.  You can also see, and adjust, the estimated income from each employer.  You need to dig down the front screen.  A PC is far better than a mobile device for seeing where these extra screens are.

Thank you I can see it now. It looks like they've  estimated the correct amount and I'll have new tax codes in April.  Dare I say it, it all appears correct. But I'll have another look once I get my P60s. Thanks everyone.
