Tax Rebate/Refund

Options
Hi all,
I owe hmrc money which I’m paying back monthly from a previous years personal tax accounts.
this year I’ve overpaid and I’m likely to be owed a refund. My question is where does this money go? Direct to hmrc or paid to me directly as it normally would?

  • I'm not sure but will depend on if you pay via PAYE.

I'm in a similar position. This year I'm paying approx £200 extra. Next year I was due to pay another £400 but I'll overpay by over £1000 this year.

When I queried this I was informed that at the start of the new tax year they will start collecting £400 but once my tax calculation is done (around end June), they'll process any refund due and change my tax code.

However my understanding is that should I still owe them money there would be no refund and they'll simply deduct any overpayment from the balance owed and collect the remainder via PAYE.
  • Hi thank you for your reply, I’m self employed so mine is done via self assessment not paye. I think it’s different.
