How to find where a payment has gone.

First of all, there is nothing dodgy going on, no secret payments to anyone!
My husband can't remember what it is for. He obviously knew at the time, but as time has gone by he has obviously forgotten. As I have said, it could be for an old debt. The only thing it says on the on line banking is Natwest £50 standing order. There is no reference, no sort code, no account number, and no name.
To the person who said if he doesn't know who it is for, how are strangers on the Internet meant to know - I didn't ask if anyone could tell us who it is for, I asked if anyone knew of any way WE can find out who it is for.
But thank you everyone for your help.
I'm hoping that now it has been cancelled that we may get a letter in the post querying why the payments have stopped. But maybe not, as we have never even had a statement from anyone over the years regarding the payments.
If we do find out, I will come back and let you all know. It may help someone else in the future.
    Cheers!

A timely reminder to check bank statements regularly and not to pay for things that one has no need to.

Ask the bank to do a forward trace on the payments for you. In addition try googling the sort code and account number.

There must be a sort code and account number, it is impossible to send a Standing Order without these details. They won't show on the statement, but they should be viewable in online banking. Sometimes the screen is called Regular Payments or similar. If you can't find it, either ask the bank or tell us which bank he's with and someone will probably be able to direct you to the correct screen.

yes I agree there will be a sort code and account number and possibly even a reference.

there wouldn't be a standing order without one

One possibility is that the payment is going to an account belonging to your husband that he has also forgotten about?

Perhaps he had decided to set aside some cash for something in particular?

I would notice a payment of £1 a month leaving my account.
How on earth do you not notice £50 for years and years.
