Insuring Mum’s house - we own the property, she lives there rent free

Welcome some pointers on how to best insure a property which we own and my mum lives in rent-free.  Building ours, contents hers.

Couple of years ago, to help her out financially we bought her out, so it’s our name on the deeds, and she has lifetime occupancy free of charge.  There is no mortgage on the property.

As we get no rent obviously affordability is key.

Can anyone recommend best approach/type of policy to buy & providers to consider?

Even though you are getting no income it sounds like you need landlords insurance, and she just needs contents insurance. The best place to ask might be over on the house buying and renting board, where there will be more members with experience of this type of insurance.

But be aware that many landlords insurance policies require the occupant to be on an Assured Shorthold Tenancy, which your mother is not. )(though the Renters Reform Bill currently going through parliament may abolish ASTs.)

I used LV+ for a similar situation to this - a bit cheaper than the policies for "normal" tenanted properties.
