You left them with the original PCN?  You don't do that!  If they fail to get it cancelled, you need it to appeal.
PRIVATE 'PCN'? DON'T PAY BUT DON'T IGNORE IT (except N.Ireland).

Yes I did, but I took a photo of it first though.  I think I will contact the parking company in a couple of days to confirm it's been cancelled.

Update: went to the store as per the phone call...
The person interrogated me as why I took so long...in the end they said they will cancel it only on this one occasion on their computer system along with a bunch of other ones they have to do that day and I can collect the PCN with cancelled on it next time I'm in store.

So all sorted hopefully, lesson learnt from me...will try and shop quicker and  probably just leave the store next time if I'm running close to the time and if there are big queues at the till.
When you go back, ask the interrogator what they suggest you do next time when you are part way through a huge shop (which is making them a profit) and you suddenly see the queues at the checkout? Maybe, as you seem to be suggesting, leave your trolley in the middle of the store (blocking an aisle), leave and go to a store that appreciates your custom.  The checkouts are under the control of the store personnel not you.
