Flooring estimate - is this just a con?

Last year i replaced the carpets at the 1st floor with hardwood flooring.
I bought 10% more than the canculated and I used approximately less than 1% more than the real area size. It was complicated to lay out because I have a rounded bay window and because I had to cut several irregular pieces near the doors: I didn't want to break the planks at the bedroom boundaries because I wanted to make the floor look an uninterrupted single stretch. Even so the leftovers were next to nothing, because what you cut at one end becomes the beginning of the other end.
The 10% more may be good for spare parts, but other than that (at least in my case) it was totally unnecessary.1
