When declaring assets and their values for probate how much detail do you need?
Would one have to declare every book in a library individually for example or can you just estimate the whole value?

Unless the books are very valuable, it's common to allow £500-1k for chattels plus extra if there's good jewelry, paintings or Persian carpets. If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0

Unless, like Charlie Watts estate, the book collection is made up of 1st editions just lump them together for a nomimal sum.0

the idea that the survivor of DH and I might have to individually value the very large collection of books in this house is probably the only thing which would persuade him to part with a few ...Signature removed for peace of mind1

My late mother had a variety of unusual objects that she accumulated over many years. Including some very old pieces of silver. A local auction house came and performed a valuation. Provided a report that we used for probate.
A number of the items were grouped in job lots not singularly listed.
We ultimately sent most to auction. Other than specfic pieces that family members wished to retain for themselves.
