Named driver question

Hi all. 

I’d like to put my elderly Mum (she’s 83) as a named driver on my car policy but my current insurance won’t quote for that.  I would have to look elsewhere.

One of the questions when asking for new quotes is always whether you have had insurance refused.  I’ve never been refused under the policies I’ve ever had in my own name, as the only driver.  Mum has never been refused insurance in her own name either.

Would the question of refused insurance apply in this situation?

No. Your insurer has declined to quote for her because she doesn't fit their own target market or their idea of an ideal customer. If you've ever used a price comparison site you'll have had the same happen to you - there are always a few insurers at the bottom who don't quote for your particular circumstances. Saga won't quote for me because I'm not 50 years old. Hiscox won't quote for you if your car is worth less than about £50K. There are probably specialist insurers who deal with high risk drivers who won't quote for you if you don't have a drink-driving conviction. And so on and so forth. None of these things makes you a pariah who has to own up to having been refused insurance for the rest of your life.

The refused insurance question refers to an insurer who has given you a quote but then refused to insure you afterwards - usually because they've found out that you've lied about something.
