Private a/c - can you give an agreed partial refund for a returned item?

Hi

So I sold an expensive brand new and sealed item a few weeks back. After two weeks of using the item, the buyer wants to return it simply because they don't like it - they even mentioned it's not faulty just not for their photography needs/wants.

Obviously I'm NOT happy as the value is now far less than it was when I resell it.

The buyer has been very apologetic when I messaged and they've agreed to compensate me both for postage cost but also losing value since it's been opened and used which is fair enough and I've agreed to, and messaged to say so.

Q is, can I partially refund once the item is returned?... I know you can when a case is opened but unsure if it's still an option once a return is delivered back to seller and ebay says 'return delivered'. Tia.

I would just say no.  If they don't want to keep it, they can sell it.

There is no way I would give any sort of refund under the circumstances.  You would get short shrift if you returned an opened and used item to a retailer.

Indeed, but this is eBay and the buyer had already opened a case, and so my options are very limited. Buyer has since posted the item today.

So I just want to know if I can give a partial refund upon delivery as now I have no other option (other than full refund). Thanks.

If a buyer opened a change of mind return having admitted in eBay messages they had used the item, a seller can refuse the return,

However if a return case has been opened then as soon as item is received a private seller has 48 hours to refund in full otherwise it is refunded automatically. Always worth a phone call to eBay though to ask whether a partial refund would still close the case in your favour.

Thanks...I'll ask eBay as we've come to an agreement via ebay message that a partial refund will be given due to inconvenience, not same as sent etc. However, unsure if eBay offer the option for partial refund (even if agreed with buyer) once the item is delivered - I can do so now but I don't have said item in my hands.

You can definitely do partial refunds in the normal course of events.  What I’m not sure about is whether if a return is confirmed this overrides this and forces a full refund.

I have a change of mind return open at the moment, it says that I have 48 hours to refund when the item shows as returned, or else it will be refunded automatically and may then affect my sellers dashboard.

Yes, that's what I'm thinking and it overrides the partial refund option once delivered, even if buyer & seller agree on refund amount. I will let you know - was hoping it'd be delivered today but postie has just been so tomorrow I'd like to think.

UPDATE: cannot offer a partial once returned item is delivered.

Fully refunded buyer but he has separately paid the agreed amount via paypal. Have to say eBay were of no help whatsoever. I've told eBay this should be an option if buyer and seller agree to such a scenario.
