putting plates on the wall

We have just been advised NOT to use the usual type of mounting ie the ones with springs on the back as they damage the plates. Apart from skyhooks not sure how else to do it. We don't have a grooved picture rail. Anyone know if any other mountings available pls? 0

If you pad the part of the spring that comes in contact with the plate it should be O K.
Piece of plastic tubing, sticking plaster or even sellotape.I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.0 -
As I remember they sell these in our local harware store.
