Magic eye and need a new tv.

Hi folks,

I have a 39 inch JVC tv about nine years old, and when I switched it on today, we noticed that there is a horizontal line about a quarter of the way down from top on screen, above the line the picture is perfectly normal, but below the line the picture is still visible but is tinged with a sort of orangey colour. I have tried troubleshooting taking it to another room with a perfectly working tv, but same problem. So it seems its a new TV

Just want around same size but do have a few extra requirements.

1 As I live in N Ireland I want to be able to receive the Saorview RTE TG4 and Virgin Media from Republic of Ireland, as we currently do, as well as having a Freeview Tuner.

2 We use the old magic eye on the old standard basic Sky box which works well for us. I understand that is an Analogue signal, so want to make sure we can use the magic eye with a new tv. The magic eye is taking the signal from Living room to the above faulty TV. We have a distribution box on loft which takes the Freeview aerial signal + that Saorview (RTE) signal + the signal from the sky box all through the magic eye.

I saw a JVC at Currys but no good as it seems JVC have totally done away with analogue tuner option that leaves me up the creek.

Any advice about getting a TV that would suit my requirements would be Gratefully appreciated.

Are you absolutely certain about that?

This from a post on AndroidCentral:

Right, I had the same question as I send various AV sources around the house via an analogue modulator and I couldn’t believe that the JVC TV didn’t have an analogue tuner.
The solution is that the TV is too clever for its own good and if you select the country as the UK it knows that we no longer transmit analogue TV so won’t try and tune to it but if you select country as other during the initial setup then it will look for analogue channels.
As you have already done the initial setup then you will have to give it a factory reset and go through the whole thing again.

Careful with this as the gap between channels is different in some countries 7MHz rather than 8MHz so it might not find anything.
  • Thanks for replies,

After to and froing from Curry's it is impossible to find a modern tv with connections such as Scart or RGB that will accept the sky signal from my probably twenty year plus basic sky box.

Is there a later box that I can buy cheaply enough that will have HDMI out to take sky signal to a new tv, plus the RIF 2 option to give power to the Magic Eye setup that I have to distribute Sky throughout the house, I am not a Sky subscriber nor do I want to be.

    Many Thanks for your help.

I bought a used $ky HD box of ebay for a fiver - it has input for twin sat connections and HDMI output - would that help?

Yes it does, can I ask if the picture quality is the same as the older box, or better?

Here is a picture of one on ebay, Am I right in thinking that the RF out that powers the magic eye and carries the output signal is on the left of box

    Many Thanks.

No, I don't think you are. Those connectors on the LHS (red, white, yellow) are composite video. I don't think that particular model has RF connections.

RF in and out are 3 Belling-Lee connectors as the picture below under the satellite dish connectors, where your box says 'Dolby, HDMI, BEAB approved'.

They are marked RF in, RF1 and RF2. RF2 is the one which carries the magic eye signal.
