Planning to use overripe tomatoes to make some tomato soup and I normally put a bit of celery in but I haven’t got any. Any suggestions for an alternative to give it that extra something?

celery? ewwww!
onion? shallot, peppers? add a bit of chilli?
some good leafy herbs are nice but it's hard to get a nice variety and quantity at this time of year. Maybe parsley? Onion is the obvious (I can't eat onion so I go the other way and use celery instead of onion). Porcini or other finely chopped mushroom? Worcestershire sauce?2

Peppers are a good alternative to celery. I've seen tomato and red pepper soup in many restaurants. Plenty of recipes online.3

wondering about carrot.....

No suggestions beyond a small bit of lovage but in the future, you can chop and freeze celery for soups

Cardamom is unexpectedly good with tomatoes and a squeeze of lime juice on top is jolly nice. I bash the pods open and extract the seeds, then crush them a bit and chuck them into the tomatoes and leave it to simmer away and add the lime juice to taste just before eating.

How about a dollop of sweet chilli sauce or a good sprinkle of mixed herbs

Thanks all - I usually use carrot, onion and celery as a base with some fresh basil thrown in so the carrot and onion are already in there.
I am liking the sound of the cardamom though so may well give that a go.All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

It's either @YoungBlueEyes or @ArbitraryRandom who has a recipe for making a heinz-a-like tomato soup. I'ts a tin of beans, a tin of tomatoes [obviousl fresh ones can also be used] and a tin of carrots all whizzed together I think [ my quantities may be off there...

And a couple of pickled onions (you need the vinegar to make it taste right).
It's an old slimming world recipe: https://www.strikeapose.co.uk/slimming-world-tomato-soup-that-tastes-just-like-heinz-but-syn-free/
I don't tend to add the carrots and don't notice a difference.I'm not an early bird or a night owl; I’m some form of permanently exhausted pigeon.2
