Hello,

I am currently on tax credits but received migration notice.

My wife is carer for our child so she will be entitled to carer element. She is also receiving carers allowance which will be deducted from the award.

My mother in law lives with us. I am working full time so cannot get carer allowance to look after her.

To get carer element you need to look after the person for 35 hrs.

I look after her after work and my wife looks after the kids who has extra needs.

5 hrs from 6 pm to 10 pm and 5 hrs on Sat/Sun makes 35 hrs. I think I should be eligible for the carer element?

She needs extra support due to her disability. She is in receipt of high rate Attendance Allowance.

Thanks

It looks like you both meet the criteria for the carer element so yes you can both be eligible (since you'd be claiming it for caring for two separate people).

I completed the application yesterday evening, I just had to complete the online ID verification which I was thinking to do today. Although I had sometime in April yo do it by.

I logged in to complete the online ID but the jobcentre booked for standard ID verification interview for Thursday at 11.50.

No reason given.  Anyone else has that?

From the journal entry it looks they went into the claim at 9.32 and booked the appointment.

Due to work I preferred online verification otherwise I would have to take time off from work.  I have left a message in the journal.

    Thanks

If your ID can't be verified online then you will have to attend your local Job centre for the appointment, unfortunately it's all part of claiming UC.

If the online verification was not failed because it it's not even started yet.

They just decided to change from online to JCP.

  • How's it going? Were you able to claim for both of you?  I'm trying to migrate from Tax Credits to UC too, my husband and I completed it online thinking it was done - how wrong! We've both already had two separate appts at the Job Centre and now I have another to attend! We don't even qualify for UC anymore but I was just hoping for the year transitional payment. I'm a Carer for my son but my husband works full time. We have savings though so I don't think I'll even be eligible for the Carer element?

If you're doing a managed migration then savings above £16k will be ignored for a year.  The carer element is part of a UC award so savings wouldn't make you ineligible for just that part.
  • My Wife gets Attendance Allowance, but I cannot get Carers Allowance. We are both 85 and I look after my wife all day every day. I have been told that I get too many pensions and our savings mean I am not entitled to claim.

You have be under state pension age to claim UC, PC tops up a pension to a point and yes you wolud be expected to use your savings to life off.

As you're both over state pension age then you will need to look at claiming Pension Credit. Carers allowance and State pension are treated as overlapping benefits so you can't be paid both at the same time, if your state pension is more than carers allowance you won't be entitled to any payments.

You would have an underlying entitlement to it, which could mean there's some entitlement to Pension Credit. Use the calculator here and put both of your details into it and it will tell you if there's entitlement. https://www.gov.uk/pension-credit-calculator

Are you claiming any disability benefits yourself?
