Without smets 1 there couldn't have been smets 2.

Smets 3 will undoubtedly cast a shadow over smets 2 when released and so on.

It's been an interesting journey with hopefully some lessons learned.

You are incredibly charitable but the comment is a little facile, my point is that SMET1 was known to not be fit for purpose and MILLIONS of people are stuck with such meters that will not work without a firmware upgrade,

We will continue to be shafted with £300+ standing charges and hiked energy prices to pay for their botch job.

I had to look this up but smart metering only works out at £15.50 of the £300+ standing charge for those that have dual fuel.

So although annoying that's not why dual fuels customer pay £300+ a year in standing charges.

So taking all that on board nobody is being particularly shafted in the way you describe it.

Let's dig further there are over 31 million residential.smart meters fitted and less than 9% have connection issue.

Annoying but again hardly a botch with 91% working.

The thing is, since we're having to pay for the rollout anyway then you may as well get a smart meter and get your money's worth.
And if your usage suits a smart tariff you'd save money, potentially more than covering the standing charge.

    Makes perfect sense to most.

The point at issue is that you CAN have a device that ends up using a vast amount of gas.
The point at issue is whether the update periodicity of smart meters  "makes them useless for live usage and profiling"

My Octopus smart meters have never worked correctly since they were installed a few years ago.
The Gas meter has never sent them readings and the electric meter is hit and miss. Missed from last September until I sent a reading in last month.
Total waste of time in My opinion.
Technology used is substandard by the look of it.
How did your complaint about this go and or the ombudsman decision?
    Got £75 and an apology.
I had to pay for all the escaped gas. Approx £1500 in the end.
