British Gas erroneous debt collection letter via BW Legal

I recieved a letter from debt collectors BW Legal saying I owned British Gas £107 for a 3 month period after I left my rented property last year. I had closed my account and moved somewhere where there was a different provider in someone else's name. BG owned me £125 and paid it back after I closed my account. The is debt agency has an hour waiting time on the phone and lots of info in their letter about how to pay quickly online. I wondered if it was a scam.
I contacted BG on their live chat and what followed what lots of nonsense. There was no clarity about how this had happened. They talked about this being a problem with their classic system and I was talking to someone from the New Energy system. They said they'd compensate me £20 and then retrated it saying it was a problem with their old system, so not their fault?! They say they've removed the debt. I asked for a complaint to be filed. Utter mess.
