How did they find out that you didn't have a cat?
They asked me to send proof of ownership and I cancelled the insurance.

    OP already said this:

Thanks for the response. That's what it was... I was asked to provide a vet letter showing I owned the pet and I didn't have it. I have paid for the insurance up until now and have not (and will not) receive the bonus. I have cancelled the policy.

This is by no means a defence but I can't understand the difference between this...and surely MSE would not recommend doing it if it was against any law? This would be insuring without an insurable interest?
I don't think traveling is mandatory / a legal requirment when buying travel insurance.
    Didn't realise that 👌
I've paid for travel insurance for the last decade (via a work scheme) but I've only been away a couple of times. So I hope I'm right
But that was Annual travel which is there if you travel. Single trip, which is what I said, is there for a specific trip. Given the OP said buying a 1 night policy to get it as cheap as possible to maximise the difference between cost and reward its not an annual policy
The advice is for "single night" not single trip, even if it were single trip, what if you changed your mind and didn't go?
Thats different to what actually happened though... this is just fabricating a trip to try and benefit from the cashback, would be a totally different matter were it actually a trip that was planned to happen and was subsequently cancelled for an uninsured reason (eg change of mind, falling out with the friend you were to visit etc).
I appreciate that sorry, I was originally replying to the OPs quote of MSE advice, which is "one night's UK travel insurance for one person"

It sounds like a storm in a teacup. Were you to decide to repeat the process in the future you'd just call and tell them to cancel it, your under no obligation to explain why you want to cancel and I am guessing this has all come about because you were overly generous with the explanation.

Why is it not legitimate to insure a cat that lives in your garden. Surely someone could want to look after the cat and therefore pay insurance to help with those expenses?

In principle it is legitimate but the OP bought a policy that insurers a cat they own when they dont own a cat, similarly how do you think they managed to get its date of birth or correctly declare what its previous medical conditions were?

You can legitimately own a cat without knowing either of these things!

Ah ok. I've self insured for my cats so not seen the forms. They are rescue so I don't actually know their ages and medical conditions, but I guess there's a "don't know" option that would cost more

I think alot of people done it at the same time e (presumably they ran a big advertising campaign and it went wrong - I clicked through an advert to get it). As of yet, I have not said anything to them about not owning a cat.

To me, it does sound like a storm in a teacup. Just hoping the storm blows over!
