My son is in the Far East on holiday and he needs to speak to his travel insurance company- Tesco. They provide a UK 0345 number that will cost him £1 a minute to call, and they don’t seem to provide a WhatsApp number.

Is there any way to get round that?

I am in the UK and I was vaguely wondering whether he can call me on WhatsApp and I can patch him through to the 0345 number?
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

Have you called Tesco to ask for an alternative number?

Is it possible to ring via a landline rather his own mobile phone.

No, but you would think that they would be aware of the problem, given that this is travel insurance?

Don't know if that number is still valid but worth a try ringing it to see

Curiously, I just rang the Tesco number on my phone, as suggested above, and it showed up as a ‘Wi-Fi call'. Does that mean that it’s not costing phone minutes, anyway?

Consider for him to use Skype after loading the app.

As far as I am aware ( and just done a quick check at https://secure.skype.com/en/credit# ) call TO UK landlines are 2.1p per minute. There are exceptions so check. Rates depend on the country you are calling TO not where you are calling FROM. He would need to add some Skype credit starting at £5.

No, it means that your phone is connecting through WiFi as the signal strength is low.

As for an 03 number it's the same cost to call as an 01 and 02 number.

Your son needs to have some way of calling back to the UK that doesn't involve WhatsApp etc.

    Thanks for setting me straight.

I think that the Skype credit suggestion above will work very nicely.
