Request from E.On to provide a meter reading info from a meter which has already been removed!!

Options
Apologies for the long discussion, but does anyone have sound advice on how to deal with this request from E.On please?  This was sent to us on 6 March which is more or less 10 months after the meter was changed!!

I do hope you are well. Your gas meter was exchanged on 18th May 2023. We have not received the meter reading from the old meter on the day of the exchange. This information is usually added to an exchange label and attached to the meter by the engineer. Are you able to retrieve this information and send this in by replying to this email. We will add this to the account and ensure the account has been billed correctly.

If we are unable to retrieve this information we will estimate a reading based on your own usage.

    Welcome to the forum.
How about looking at the label next to the new meter, noting the reading taken from the old meter and sending it to E.On?

We don't have a reading from the old meter. As it states in E.On's email, the engineer was supposed to make a note of this before the meter was removed but it wasn't done.

E.on are normally very good about the meter exchange ticket, IME. It is a buff cardboard label, screwed to the backboard, with the details of old and new meter written on it.

Is there a sticker on the new meter giving both old and new meter readings? That's what mine has.

Are you saying you didn't take a photo of the old meter readings before it was changed? Always cover your back with energy companies.
  • Hubby just informed me that it wasn’t possible to take a meter reading when it was removed as it wasn’t working at all. Herein lies the problem!

I guess you'll have to go with their estimate then unless anyone else can suggest otherwise.

Challenge their estimate if you think it's wrong of course. How long was the meter out of action?
  • Update!!  We received an estimated bill which was obviously not carefully calcuated by them.  This completedly wiped out our account credit and also put us in a debit situation.  We appealed and have now received confirmation that they have relooked at the estimated account and refunded us quite a good amount, leaving us with some credit thank goodness.
The conclusion is that always contact a company if you have issues and ensure you have a carefully worded and polite communication with them.  This time it worked!!
