Default issued in wrong name

Hi there. Sorry if this is a long post.

So I’ve been trying to contact British Gas recently about a default they registered on my credit file 4 years ago but has only recently showed up. After my 4th attempt at contacting them, I was told on live chat that my first name had been misspelled. I was told by the chat operator that he would raise the case to an internal team and the default would be removed within 10 working days.

So I go back to my credit file and I scrutinise it more closely. I notice I have another default for a different utility company that I had satisfied where my surname was spelt wrong. Am I in a position to have this one removed?

Any advice on how to proceed (if applicable) would be appreciated.

Thank you for reading

If the default is legitimately yours, then no, a typo doesn't invalidate the notice being correctly reported

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

  • Thank you for your reply. If that’s the case then could I ask why British Gas are removing the default? The chat operator also said that if British Gas was found to be at fault then I would be compensated.

It might be their policy, it might be a low cost and easier to make you go away, if it's your debt though, they don't have to just because of a typo, that is the point - they could just correct it and reapply it
