Update. Amazon have agreed to a refund and I have got an email that one is in progress.In fact the gift card that I used to part pay (the only reason I used Amazon) has been refunded , I expect the credit card refund for the balance will take a few days.
with hindsight I should have ignored the web site returns process and gone straight to customer service.
thanks to everyone who commented it helps to feel I’m not alone1 -

Glad it's been sorted.
Amazon have progressively moved to automated customer services. On clear cut returns, change of mind or faulty/damaged item that works perfectly well but anything outside the norm can take ages to sort out.

The reality is that I will now be very reluctant to buy high value items on line.
I’m looking at walking in to car phone warehouse and getting a piece of hardware in my hand before getting the credit card out.
