Small claims court for refund due

Does anyone have experience of chasing a refund from a rogue builder via the small claims court? Just wondering how successful it is

Depends on builder (sole or Ltd co) having any funds.

Ah, that’s probably where it’ll fall down

Well, obviously you're not going to get any money out of them if they don't have any!

I wasn’t sure whether it was worth going down that route; I thought it might affect their credit score or something even if they can’t pay me back

Credit score is a made up figure by the CRA & is never seen by lenders.
You would need a CCJ to have any real effect on their ability to get any finance.

A CCJ would be on their credit record and might cause them problems, but if it's a company which they're going to wind up anyway then they might not care.

And you're talking about spending more of your own money for some sort of moral victory of which you'll probably not see any evidence.
