Car Insurance for EU Visitor

Does anyone have any recent experience of putting a visitor from the EU onto their own car insurance for a temporary period? My father in law from Germany is visiting in April, and we wanted to insure him on the car for a week, but the insurer won't insure temporary visitors, and everywhere I've looked including temporary insurers, all state that driver needs to be UK resident for minimum of 12 months prior. We were previously insured by Admiral and they used to add him on no problem each time he visited. I wonder if this has been tightened post Brexit or if Admiral were just unique?! Unfortunately the Admiral annual premiums went up so much, we had to move to another provider.

Maybe FiL could get car insurance in Germany to cover him here?

Very unlikely that a German policy will adequately cover him to drive a UK registered car in the UK.

Admiral do seem to be particularly good for foreign drivers. When I added a Ukrainian guest to my insurance a couple of years ago Admiral stood out as one of the few insurers who quoted at all, and pretty much the only one who quoted at anything resembling the amount I was already paying.

Is hiring a car an option if the insurance problem proves impossible/to expensive?

I should have stuck with Admiral but they were just quoting too high a premium at renewal!

Yes, will likely have to go down the hire car route.

I think my Mum has car insurance with LV, who would have agreed to add my brother (has a UK driving licence but lives in the EU) to her insurance for a short period

In 2017,  I  temporarily insured my son's partner ,with an EU licence , when they were staying with us for a month. I was with Tesco.

When I enquired last year Tesco  would not cover her with an EU licence.
  • Can anyone help?

I'm looking to insure my 82 year old father for 8 days on my car. He's a Spanish resident with a Spanish driving licence. I'm really struggling to find someone to insure him at a reasonable price. Has anyone found a good solution please? I've searched the threads on here but there seems to be no complete answer. Thanks

at 82 premiums will have started going up again, add to that he's a non-resident with a non-uk licence and its temp insurance so vastly more expensive per day for low risks and "a reasonable price" is unlikely to be achieved.

Car hire may well be the better option though again with age there may be a premium to pay.
