  • It irrelevant to whether one switches to grab a great deal from high street financial firms.I have used Abbey in the past as well as Barclays,HSBC,Halifax and all offer interest rates that suits your need.

    Do more research.

The Credit Crunch can see a lot of devastating effect on the economy, so Why not start by having an ISA savings account. Plan for the future and the present won't hurt you.
I work on behalf of MS, however, my views do not necessarily reflect theirs, I am not acting as a representative of the company while on this forum and I cannot warrant that what I say is 100% correct in all cases.
  • I have been an Abbey customer for 24 years. Since Santander took it over, my experience with them has been dreadful. Service is appaling: Lack of product knowledge, a merry-go-round of department calling trying to speak to the correct person, foreign call centres, slow service in branches ( inadequate / poor computer system ) etc etc.

I am looking to change. I accept that all banks have issues of some sort, but anything must be better than this!
  • My Abbey account was open less than a month. The service was so unbelievably poor. The final clincher was when I went into the branch just up from Charing Cross station to sort out an overdraft and was told I had to use the phone at the front of the shop as branch staff could not "do" overdrafts. This phone was in fact a poorly working line to someone who could barley understand me in India. I do not expect to walk into a bank branch and have this experience. Half way through the incredibly frustrating conversation I dropped the receiver from my hand to the floor and walked out. I closed the account at another branch later that day.

Now that is how it's done. Show these pathetic institutions your contempt, don't hold back!!

Please consider carefully - all my staff who were with Abbey recently switched to Nationwide and wish they had done this years ago. Disastrous customer service. With Nationwide I get free money abroad and have had first class service in every respect.

I agree with you, but customer service doesn't mean a bank is disastrous. Both Nationwide and HSBC do have a good service and give free money abroad without any hidden interest rate.

ISA savings and Online banking can help prevent & monitor your accounts.

  • Never ever ever bank with Abbey - their customer service skills are terrible, you will spend ages on the phone being passed around Indian call centres and I never resolved any problems over the phone.
If you really have to have an account with Abbey, please consider and be prepared for two things:
    1. Their computer system is rubbish and will sometimes clear a payment for you twice, sometimes taking you overdrawn - you get the money back, but you are £52.75 down because they took £52.75 twice when you did your shopping...
    2. If you have an overdraft, chances are they will bodge it up at some point. They increased mine and then reduced it within 2 weeks, and charged me for the priviledge. Oh, and they also cancel overdrafts when they feel like it...

I also had the 'use the phone in branch' problem - it's the same call centre you get when calling from home, except because you are in branch you have less chance of hearing anything they are saying!

Needless to say, my account is now CLOSED.
