Check if you are in debit on the account. Firms may increase your monthly amount to recover amounts in debit over time. The price cap coming down only affects charges for usage after the change comes into effect.
EDF tried to increase my monthly last year and after phoning them they agreed to a lower monthly figure. As long as you have looked at debit position, usage etc and you are confident £245/m is too much they may entertain such a request.0 -
Thanks gravel_2 I think I was in shock
when the price rise popped up and they have taken two readings on the same day - one for a guess was estimated the other was from the readings that I gave them on the same day - I've sent them a screenshot

@littleD I don't think you've said what your annual consumption (in kWh not £) is. Back in 2022 your DD was £286 - now £145
I wonder if the issue is infrequent meter readings - do you send yours monthly ?Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0 -
Thanks all, I'll check the usage and the bill explanation and also see what the reply to my message to EDF comes back with!0

hi all, I thought the household gas and electric was coming down - EDF have just let me know that my direct debit is changing from £154 p/m to £245 p/mYour direct debit is not the cost of energy.
The direct debit is the estimated average cost over the year of your usage and any arrears you have built up.
Autumn 2022/Winter 2023 was mild and most people didn't use as much heating fuel as usual. Autumn 2023 was colder (in general) although Winter 2024 has been mostly mild. So, energy use has been higher during this period.
If you have been relying on estimated readings for long periods and not supplying a monthly reading, then it can go out of sync very quickly.

Good comments but suppliers will, in my experience, attempt to set the Direct Debit at a higher level than necessary which obviously benefits them. I can't remember ever accepting the level they have suggested and I can only recall falling slightly into debt (at the end of winter) on one bill.0
