Tax free childcare account

Can you get one if not working? My wife is not working currently as looking after our 18 month old son and pregnant with our second child. Hmrc have asked for payslips but obviously she doesn’t have any. Is she not eligible?

If she isn’t eligible, should I open an account as I am working? Does it matter which one of us has the account?

Is your wife on maternity leave or just not employed at all?

     Does she claim any benefits?

Not on mat leave. Not working. No benefits other than child benefit.

Then you won't be able to claim it. Please see link posted.

As a couple we can’t claim it or just my wife? Could I set up an account to claim?

You both need to be employed so you are not entitled to claim

Did you actually read the link posted above

    If you’re working

You can usually get Tax-Free Childcare if you (and your partner, if you have one) are:

    • in work
    • on sick leave or annual leave
    • on shared parental, maternity, paternity or adoption leave and you’re going back to work within 31 days of the date you first applied
