Kitchen Unit door hinges.

Hi folks,

I have kitchen units in since house was built in late eighties, oak doors which are probably showing their age but not that bad really, chip board type units.

I'm having trouble with a few of the hinges, a real nightmare to adjust when doors start to rub against each other etc.

This is the type of hinge, just wondering if they might be still available in in the same standard size with screw holes more in same place etc.

Or could I get a  carpenter to fit different hinges, I will try a lot of things but a bit of a Frank Spencer when it comes down to fitting things precisely, so that's the reason I would get someone to do it.

The circular bit is around 35mm or less.

Dont think the fundamental design of kitchen hinges have changed in decades... Screwfix have many different designs, the MMs referred to is the length of the hinge and then you've got the degrees open you want it to go... most are 110 so just over perpendicular to the worksurface.

They tend to be a standard fit, but if you take one to, say, Screwfix, they will compare them for you, I'm sure.
Standard 'sprung' hinges for £3-odd bought individually, or soft-close for a £ound extra. You know you want to...

they look perfectly serviceable to me. If you search on Youtube there's plenty of short videos showing how to adjust these hinges in all directions.

Ah, I misread the Q, Tonygold. Are the hinges actually working ok? Ie, you open the doors against a firm-but-gentle spring pressure until they are around 45o open, and then they become 'loose' and free-moving? Ditto in reverse; free moving door until around 45o closed, and then a build-up of spring pressure until the door is around 20o from closed, whereupon the door is pulled firmly shut?
If your situation IS just about adjustment, then you simply need instruction.
(But if any need replacing, then soft-close is lush. I wish I had them, but I'm too mean to replace them until actually needed...)
  • Thanks for replies, I think it will be a case of replacing some of the hinges, as units have been in well over thirty years, and some of the screws over the years (probably due to being adjusted as well) seem to have enlarged the hinge part that they have fitted into, leading to no longer fitting properly.

I have put a different screw into one which for the time being seems to be working better.

My partner had mentioned getting a new kitchen before, but I have said most that we have seen in homebase etc, might look nice enough, but they are probably all chipboard doors and a few years down the line, they won't look so good.

The doors on our units are oak with a nice traditional design on front so my idea is they will last for rest of our lives.

Both the doors and worktop could do with a re-varnish though as really faded in places, so don't know if that would be easy enough to do, if anyone has done it on oak doors.

    Thanks.
