Car renewal quote

Just received my renewal quote this after receiving an email 2 weeks ago stating all car insurances will increase by up to 50%. They were correct, my cover went from £625 to £1250 this year. I have automatic renewal so I logged in on app to find I can't cancel through app you have to call them.
First off I Got a renewal quote from a comparison site for third party FT instead of fully comp for £520. I called my insurance provider asking to cancel my renewal, they annoyingly tried to ask for my new quote details which i refused to supply, it took a heated conversation to get it through to them, I was put on hold until they finalized my cancellation then came back on confirming it but stated they could offer renewal for fully comp for £675, £50 more than last years....not quite 50% eh?
Insurance companies obviously put out a daft quote hoping that people will not challenge it. I recommend people not to tick the auto renewal box when accepting terms.

Eh? When I was in school that would have been a 100% increase, not up to 50%.

I was about to say exactly the same :)

Errm yes, this has always been the advice since the year dot.  Always shop around every year for insurance - whether it's car insurance, house insurance or whatever.  Never just blindly auto-renew.
A law was bought in relatively recently to say they have to offer the same price for the same product bought via the same channel, whether you're a new or existing customer - but it's still wise to shop around every year.  But always make sure you're comparing like with like - there are so many variables on car insurance (voluntary excess, compulsory excess and a whole host of optional extras) that it can actually be quite fiddly to make sure one policy gives you exactly the same level of cover as another.

Its never been the advice... certainly dont let it blindly auto-renew but its prudent to have auto renewal on.

Look how many posts we get on here about their policy had renewed without them realising it, those people would have been driving uninsured had it not been on auto-renewal. Even if you are more mindful of your dates no one can guarantee they won't be ill at that time or have a close love one die where dealing with your car insurance just isn't top of the list so again having the auto-renewal on prevents you accidentally breaking the law and potentially having very big bills to pay.

From my own claims days had one customer facing a £40,000 bill after they forgot to renew and hit someone and they were pleading that we renewed them anyway. Personal injury damages cannot be written off through bankruptcy either as they're explicitly excluded.

As to the OP, would be interested to know which company it was, almost certainly its a broker not an insurer.
  • I received a renewal of £223 from £141 last year from AA. Told them I was cancelling and going elsewhere due to the increase and they came down to £145!! I said that it seemed crazy that we have to spend time on the phone when they could have sent the lower renewal price in the first place. She blamed it on the underwriters!

A renewal quote is from the same  underwriter as your current policy.

Just like when you go on a comparison site and get different quotes from different underwriters ,the AA can search the different  underwriters they have access to , to get you a different quote.

Years ago I did have an occasion when the insurer advised my renewal quote but  also offered a cheaper quote from another underwriter.

    It has never happened again.
