Microsoft one drive

Hi, so recently I put 4gb of old photos on my new windows 10pc, one drive was busy backing them up, and it kept reporting that I'd used up all my one drive space, so I paused one drive uploads, or so I thought. It seems to have deleted all the files off my hard disk!
I'm just very confused by it and concerned that it's deleted a thousand photos without telling me, could anyone tell me how I can at least store the files in my pictures without one drive doing anything to them!

I do still have the files on a USB thankfully by the way.0

I think it had moved all the files into a one drive file (on my c drive), rather than delete them. I've unlinked one drive from my PC, it's too confusing and obsessed with nagging me!1

Can you not still see them in the bin or trash of the one drive online. They stay there 30 days unless you delete them before then0
