Try to limit the heating to an hour in the morning and two in evening but thermostat upstairs doesn't work so not sure what the temp is anywhere. House is almost two hundred years old and 'one and a half storeys' so no attic to insulate over main building except by having it blown in...never manage to price it in summer but maybe 2008 as it seems to have been cold here all this year...OH would have central heating (oil) and electric radiators on too 24/7 given a chance so have to watch him all the time...a 67 year old child!

As a youngster I lived here before central heating, double glazing or dry lining, so have little sympathy when my family complain about how cold it is now....and I remember standing in front of the fire to warm my bum and not wanting to move!

Have we all got soft I ask myself??

  • After last year, when we had a £500 gas bill for 3 months! I have been far more frugal with the heating. Its on from 6.30 till 8.30 in the morning, and then from 5-7 in the evening. Just to take the chill off,as when I get home I light the coal fire in the lounge. And all the coal we have is free!! I'm hoping I should see a major difference in my bills this winter.

    CC limits £26000

    Long term CC debt £0

Total low rate loan debt £3000

    Almost debt free feeling, priceless.

Ex money nightmare, learnt from my mistakes and never going back there again, in control of my finances for the first time in my adult life and it feels amazing.
  • lets discuss what we are wearing. The temp in the north half of the house is 17 and on the sunny side is 21. The heating has been off since 6.30 am. I haven`t felt cold all day, in spite of sitting in 17. Luckily it is the kitchen and lounge which are on the sunny side and are at 21 now

I am wearing warm tights (not woolly, just a thick denier) a full length slip, a long cord skirt and a lambswool jumper. I have dressed according to the season

our total energy bill is £46 a month and I don`t stint. I just dress appropriately and our house is insulated

I've got a wall thermostat set to 17C and on a timer so it comes on between 6am and 9pm (not normally on that long but on maternity leave so I'm in all day) although that tends to keep the house at about 18/19C which is fine for me. If I get a bit cold I just snuggle up in a blanket or put a fleece top on for a while. Clothes wise, we normally wear trousers, top and jumper/fleece.
Think my body thermostat is a bit out at the moment though with being pregnant, I start burning up if the room goes above 19C and still got summer duvet (4.5tog) on the bed, which is still too warm for me most of the time.

No idea what my gas bill is at the moment - we have it as a direct debit which was £28 a month but that was in loads in credit last year so they've dropped it to £5 a month!! (somehow I think we may end up owing them some this time!)

I loathe being cold too, and really feel it so temp is set to 19 when I am busy in the day and 21/22 when I am relaxing in the evening :)

If only global warming was just that, and didn't have negative issues attached ;)
