Thanks for those replies.   Yes, I had looked into Free wills month - there isn't anybody close to where we are, but may have another look into the nearest there is.  I have had replies and it seems £600 plus VAT (for both) is the cheapest around here which we just have to accept and get on with it!

    Thanks all!

Long term, it costs a lot less to pay a slightly higher fee to a solicitor who doesn't expect to their company to be named as executors, when your family need someone to execute/administer your estate. And arrange for the will to be held by the HMTCS rather then the solicitors. The latter cost us £lots even though the firm weren't named as executors.

Also note you should be able to write a 'future-proof' will, and a solicitor will help you do that so that when the first of you dies, you don't have to re-write it. The will just says something like "I leave it all to my spouse, and if they don't survive me then our daughter Sally gets the lot, and if she dies before spouse it all goes to her offspring / the cats' home / my favourite local charity."

Re-writing your will is unlikely to be the first thing you want to do after a death in the family.
Signature removed for peace of mind
