I have instructed a solicitor but told them not to proceed until the surveys on my sale and purchase are done.

I had thought the chain was complete as the vendor told me she was moving in with family and her ex was renting (they are getting divorced)

Turns out one of them is buying a property.  Should I  wait until I  know the chain is complete before proceeding further with the legal work?  I am being pressured by the vendor's sales progressor but she  won't confirm if the chain is complete although that may be because the vendor is mucking her around.

I don't want to mess people about but nor do I want to lose money on fees

Yes. Ask for clarity as to what's happening. Divorcing couples can be a nightmare. There's the division of money to be agreed as well.
