USB 2 upgrade

Hi all, I have an old pc which has 2 usb 1.1 ports and I want to upgrade to USB 2.0.I have been given a 4 port card(PCI) but not the disc/drivers. The chip is the Via VT6212L and the card has 4 external ports- but I dont know the supplier! I know how to physically install it, but what do I do about the software? I have checked online and some of the advice leaves me baffled(not difficult!) Will it just "plug and play" or will I mess up the whole works? As always, your advice is greatly appreciated, but please try and keep it simple!!!

  • What operating system do you use? If its XP plug and play should work just fine :)

More info available here where it states
Support for the VIA Vectro VT6212 is built into Microsoft Windows XP and Windows 2000. Win98SE and WinME drivers are also suitable for the VIA Vectro VT6212.

I had some terrible trouble getting a "cheap" Trust USB 2 card working in a couple of older USB 1.1 PCs, it just wouldn't run at the correct speed despite the drivers, I'm sure it had a similar VIA chipset. It certainly didn't plug-and-play with XP Pro at all.

I then upgraded them both with a Belkin USB 2 card, and it worked straight out of the box.

Firstly, install it. Then download and run: Unknown Device Identifier 5.02

Use the info to find the correct driver.

More info here if you need it.

Seems that the drivers are available through Windows Update. In other words; allow Windows to connect to the Internet(via Device Manager) in order to download and install the Drivers.

Hmmm... I think there is a mosquito in here. I hate mosquitoes. :)
