Installing a driveway
Hi all
So I am getting a car really soon from motability and it will be electric. We currently don't have a driveway but we are seeking people to install one. Some people came out to quote today and was a little more than I was hoping for.
We would need one asap but at the moment funds are tight and the people who we had round won't take credit cards. I would have to get a money transfer card as currently we do have savings but that is for the bathroom we are getting done out.
In total it's going to be around 5k with the drop kerbbfrom the council but we don't have exact figure from the council. I could put that cost on the credit card but the actual drive may need a money transfer card.
In my heart we need this and don't mind going for it but my head is like it's crazy your doing this.
Getting a driveway would save 20 -30 quid a charge compared to charging it up at public points due to the prices of some at the fast rate. The savings we make by going on motability scheme will be swallowed by the cost of the driveway but the driveway will be there for many years and ready for the next car if my pip gets renewed or even if we buy a car away from the scheme.
We may not get the car straight away if one in our spec is not in the UK so gives us time to save a bit of money to get driveway done.
So what I am making is the driveway worth getting even though it costs a bit to do.

Why did you choose an electric car if you don't have a driveway or a way to charge it?4.29kWp Solar system, 45/55 South/West split in cloudy rainy Cumbria.0

Probably not given the choice due to the green agenda0

What sort of driveway are you going for? Maybe just go with a dropped kerb and then the surface stripped and gravel for now.
You could hire a grass stripper and throw down gravel quite cheaply.0 -
Another option is to use a card like Elli where you pay £13.99 a month then get rapid public charging from 44p/kwh.
The car may come with its own charging card which you likely do something similar.
Lot cheaper than a driveway.4.29kWp Solar system, 45/55 South/West split in cloudy rainy Cumbria.0 -
I would second putting down a bit of gravel.
Driveways seem to attract all the cowboys - hardly surprising they won't take credit cards.
A friend of ours was quoted £24k for their drive - but boasted that they cunningly got it for £12k "for cash". Strangely enough, a completely different firm turned up to do the work. Stranger still, their neighbour also wanted a drive and spoke to this firm who agreed to their drive (the same layout) for the same price that they were being paid... £6k.
Anyway, the drainage is terrible so it now floods whenever it rains...0 -

The house 2 doors down had their drive done "on the cheap" with stone chippings (looks like ballast to me..)The mess is incredible! their stones have gone past my house now, and I keep finding them on my drive.I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

If there are already parking issues on the street then there is a good chance of not getting a dropped kerb due to the loss of parking spaces.
