I wouldn't consider going abroad if I couldn't afford the travel insurance, particularly to the USA and particularly if I had serious chronic conditions as she did.Pollycat said:
Just reading about a 76 year old lady with health issues who couldn't afford the $3k travel insurance for her trip to Disney World.fingzuk said:What is wrong with EHIC GHIC?
Brit Grandmother stranded in hospital after refusing travel insurance
I wonder if she feels her EHIC GHIC is sufficient now...
She's in the USA so EHIC/GHIC doesn't apply. The general point is well made though.

GHIC won't cover illness arising from chronic conditions.0

My earlier comment about EHIC GHIC was in reference to the poster who said:thriftytracey said:GHIC won't cover illness arising from chronic conditions.fingzuk said:What is wrong with EHIC GHIC? - All Insurance is a Business, they aren't there to lose revenue to 'Bleating Claimers' unless the Claim is small and your 'Excess' in their Small Print is covering half of your claim (Good for stat's) - The very minute an insurance handler hears you're in a non-public expensive hospital, they'll harvest your detail and location quicker than AI, then call the hospital to say they are unlikely to cover any Billing until investigations have been concluded as to Drink-Drugs and undisclosed & uninsured activities - at which point you'll be swiftly loaded onto a Sack Truck with Billing up to the phone call from UK Insurers and Taxied into a GHIC hospital for the next weeks at which point the Insurers will say "sorry for the delay, and we're now ready to Pay!".

Really? Where do you get that information from?thriftytracey said:GHIC won't cover illness arising from chronic conditions.
AIUI GHIC will cover pre-existing and chronic conditions if they flare up on holiday and need treatment. Which seem to agree:
The European Health Insurance Card and Global Health Insurance Card explained - Which?
"Both the Ehic and Ghic cover treatment of a chronic or pre-existing condition if the symptoms flare up during your holiday and a visit to a healthcare professional becomes necessary. It also covers routine medical care for people with pre-existing conditions that need monitoring."0 -
The OP asked about travel insurance. Only having EHIC or GHIC doesn't cover the insurance side, only basic medical attention in state run facilities. If you are ill, and you and your companion need to extend your stay, travel insurance will cover that and arrange for later flights, etc. Equally, if you are too ill to travel in the first place the insurance will cover the cost of re-arranging the holiday, cancellation, etc.For many the cost of travel insurance is not that high, yet it seems a few don't bother and cry to the media wanting someone to pay for their foolishness when stranded in a hospital bed overseas.0

Who knew? Wow, you learn something new every day. Why didn't anyone say that earlier?Frozen_up_north said:The OP asked about travel insurance. Now, what's the answer to the specific point raised today? Not last March which has been covered ad nauseam.0 -
Yes I am fully aware of that but my first bit is relevant (that I wouldn't go abroad without a policy). My travel is mostly in Europe.TELLIT01 said:katejo said:

I won't go abroad without insurance either. I'm waiting for the results of some tests so can't really try to get insurance at present.
