Registering for PAYE

As a sole trader.
I’ve registered as an employer via the sole trader link on hmrc /Gov.uk and am awaiting my details.
I’m going round in circles trying to register for PAYE , it won’t let me do it from my online tax account, saying I need to register as an ‘organisation’ which I’ve done via the link and have a new Gov. uk account, which is ‘locked out’ of my other account.

I’ve tried to register for PAYE on the new account but I can’t get past the are you a Director or Partner page ( seems to be set up for Ltd or LLPs, not sole traders) and I can’t see how it will work once I have my employer reference details as they are attached to my original account.
Why do they have to make things so ridiculously complicated?
Any advice please?
I’ve asked on hmrc forums but they’re about as useful as a chocolate fireguard 🙄 and I’m not expecting much clarity.

If you are a sole trader and do not have a turnover high enough to need to be a limited company, why are you trying to register under PAYE?
You just do self assessment surely?0 -
Because I employ my wife, soon to be over the LeL. That’s why I’ve registered as an employer, I have to run Payroll even though she/I will pay no NI or Tax. It’s a requirement.
It means she will get NI credits and be able to pay more into her Sipp.0
