Good Evening.
I am looking for some friendly advise on a problem that I have.
I am in receipt after some two years of my PAYG gas statement.
This is the first time that I have been able to view a number of gas and electricity statements.
On page 1 for the dates 29th March 2021 to 03rd March 2022 it states and at that time that the account was in credit to the tune of £890.10.
I have politely asked EDF to refund that credit of which I am led to believe a customer can request if the account is in credit.
Can someone please kindly advise me on.any legal rights that I might have to recover this credit that has only been identified now.
Thanks Andy

Are you sure that isn't just showing the amount credited to your account over that period?
What does the rest of your statement show as the charges for that period?
It would usually be very difficult to accumulate that much credit on a PAYG account so it feels like some details may be missing?
Did your account with EDF end at 3/3/22?

If you are PAYG then you do just that, pay as you go, there will be no excess credit as you top up then use the credit. If you were truly that much in credit, that’s what it would show on your meter.

    This what the statement reads.

    29 March 2021 - 03 MARCH 2022 ( 340 DAYS )

    Your top ups £ 4,642.00

Your charges for period ( including VAT ) £3,751,10

YOUR NEW ACCOUNT BALANCE £ 890.90
                                                                Credit
Prior to going PAYG I paid by monthly instalments.

Again if anyone could kindly advise me what this statement actually means at the end of the day, this would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks Andy

It means nothing unless the meter reads are marked as actually ones sent in by a smart meter or readings you send in regularly and are not marked as estimates.

If they are actuals then you are in credit by £890.90 at that point but what happened after?

Do you have your statement from March 22 to March 23? What does that say? Balances regardless of debit or credit are carried forward so a credit you may have had 2 years ago would no longer be relevant now.
When did you go onto PAYG?

Why would a credit be no longer relevant after two years?

Because your next statement would begin with the opening balance of £890.90 then add your top-ups and deduct your charges for the period to give a new balance.

What matters is the current balance...

As what @MWT said which is why I asked what your statement from March 22 to March 23 says.

Period from March 22 to March 23 statement reads your top ups £3, 567, charges for same period £3, 567.
    Balance £ 0.00
Look closely at that statement to make sure the £3,567 does not include the balance from the previous period...
