Car rental licence issue

So, we fly abroad on 30th March (EU). We just got married and my wifes licence expires on the 1st April. We planned to rent a car whilst out there, but due to the needed name change, it can only be done via post and can take up to 4 weeks for the licence to come back. Which is obviously cutting it very fine.

Just wondering if anyone has any clever ideas/ solutions. For example, could she renew online with her old name and change it when she gets back do you think? I dunno.

And no, I dont drive

It's your wife's choice whether she changes her name on marriage so I don't see a problem with your suggested solution. 

Incidentally, I suppose her passport is in her maiden name also? 🤔

actually no. That had expired a while ago so we had the forsight to get that in her married name

Is it possible that having passport and driving licence in different names will create its own problems?

Surely doing it online is much easier, should intheory get it back quicker.

Simple solution: travel around Europe by train.

This forum and other boards are full of stories about all the problems people have with car-hire in Europe. Meanwhile, public transport varies from the good to the excellent. So give yourselves an easy life and avoid all the hassles of driving.
